The American Academy of Pediatrics’ recommendation that children visit a dentist for a preventive check up no later than their first birthdays is supported by The American Dental Association, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, Arizona Academy of Pediatric Dentists and the Arizona Dental Association. The new EPSDT tracking form includes guidance at the 12 month well-child visit on first dental appointments and identifying white spots. PCPs may refer EPSDT members for dental assessment at an earlier age if their oral screening reveals potential problems requiring assessment and/or treatment by a dental professional.
The Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) recognizes the importance of early intervention and treatment of dental disease in infants. The ADHS Bureau of Oral Health’s new “Dental Visit by Age 1” interactive media campaign aims to increase awareness of the importance of early oral health care by arming parents and caregivers with the knowledge and power they need to protect their children from oral disease, and by enlisting the help of pediatricians across Arizona to help spread the word about proper pediatric dental care.
